Guns N’ Roses To Release 3D Concert Movie

Guns N’ Roses have announced that they are releasing a 3D concert film of a show from their 12-night residency at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from last year.

Appetite for Democracy’s release was announced on Facebook, and the production company behind the movie, Rock Fuel Media, have confirmed that it will be shown in theatres, on TV and DVD later this year too.

Wendy Mitchell, Screen Daily’s editor, said of the 3D format, “It doesn’t quite feel like being at the concert but it does feel like the next best thing. It brings so much more to a concert film to have that third dimension.”

Mitchell added, “It goes from being something we’ve all seen and experienced a lot, to an event, an experience, especially when you’re going to the cinema to see it. It’s very immersive, you get more of the staging of a big concert.”

Guns N’ Roses will follow U2, Katy Perry, and Metallica, by releasing a 3D movie. Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never currently holds the honor for the highest grossing music concert movie in the US, having grossed around $98.6 million at the box office.

Mitchell also went on to note, “For a band like Guns N’ Roses, it’s not trying to be pop perfection like Katy Perry. People want to see them rocking out and sweaty even if they are a bit older. A lot of their fans grew up with them, they don’t have to be perfect.”

Guns N’ Roses will release their first concert movie in 21 years soon.

A trailer for the Guns N Roses 3D movie ‘Appetite For Democracy’ has gone online.

‘Appetite For Democracy’ was filmed live from the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas on November 21, 2012. The tour focused on the ‘Appetite For Destruction’ album 25 years after its release and the 4 years since the release of the most recent Guns N’ Roses album ‘Chinese Democracy’. The tour came to Australia in March, 2013.

The new movie features previously unreleased Guns N’ Roses covers of Pink Floyd ‘Another Brick In The Wall Part 2’, ‘The Seeker’ from The Who and ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ from Neil Young.

The Guns N’ Roses band for the movie is Axl Rose, Dizzy Reed, Chris Pitman, Tommy Stinson, Richard Fortus, Bumblefoot, Frank Ferrer and DJ Ashba.

Guns N’ Roses are hitting the silver screen this summer. The band has just released a trailer for the 3D concert film Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Democracy 3D Live at the Hard Rock. As the title implies, the movie documents the band's performance at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on November 21, 2012, when the group paid tribute to the 25th anniversary of the release of their debut album, Appetite for Destruction.

The three-minute trailer features snippets of GN'R performing a number of their biggest hits, including "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child o' Mine," "Live and Let Die," "November Rain," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Paradise City." According to Setlist.fm, the November 21 concert also featured covers of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2," The Who's "The Seeker" and Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down."

While a firm release date for Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Democracy 3D Live at the Hard Rock has yet to be announced, it's expected to arrive in theaters sometime this summer. Visit the film's Facebook page for more information.

Guns N’ Roses’ New 3D Movie Headed to Theaters

Guns N’ Roses will release their new concert movie ‘Appetite for Democracy 3D‘ on DVD and Blu-ray next month, but if you don’t want to wait until July 1 to watch it at home, you can see it in theaters in just a couple of weeks.

‘Appetite for Democracy 3D’ will play a special “one night only” theatrical engagement on June 18, playing on screens in a list of 100 cities that includes Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Tucson, among others. The rollout is a venture between Rock Fuel Media and DRK Productions, who shared their enthusiasm in a joint press release. “We are very excited to be presenting the ‘Appetite For Democracy’ 3D concert film at cinemas across America — the first-ever GNR concert movie release in theaters,” said Rock Fuel president Barry Summers. “‘Appetite For Democracy’ will be a first [chance] for GNR fans to see and hear this iconic band on the big screen in 3D.” Added DRK president Doug Kluthe, “We’re very pleased that Rock Fuel has chosen us to theatrically distribute this epic Guns N’ Roses 3D concert film.”

Culled from footage of a November 2012 performance, ‘Appetite for Democracy 3D’ offers a 26-song set list blending GNR hits and covers, and is debuting alongside an ‘Appetite for Democracy’ app that allows fans to “connect with one another via social media while also offering exclusive merchandise and a host of other features.”

GUNS N' ROSES' "Appetite For Democracy 3D: Live From The Hard Rock Casino - Las Vegas" has remained at No. 1 on the Music DVD chart after selling 1,600 copies in the United States in its second week of release. The set has moved around 6,400 units to date. The show was filmed on November 21, 2012 during the "Appetite For Democracy" tour in celebration of twenty-five years of "Appetite For Destruction" and four years of "Chinese Democracy".

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Democracy 3D

By now Guns N' Roses fans are used to waiting. The number of years it took GNR front man Axl Rose to finish 2008's Chinese Democracy, the band's latest, is debatable. What's not debatable is that prior to the release of Chinese Democracy GNR had not put out any new original music for 17-years, since the Use Your Illusion albums. And it boggles the mind to think that Appetite for Democracy is the band's first live concert film in 22-years. The upside is that Appetite for Democracy is so good that fans will probably never have to wait for another concert film; this is the definitive performance right here.

First, and always a question with Guns N' Roses, the line-up. Backing Axl are three stellar guitarists, DJ Ashba, Richard Fortus and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, keyboards player Dizzy Reed, bassist Tommy Stinson, keyboards player Chris Pitman and drummer Frank Ferrer. Those out front have their rock 'n' roll posturing down pat; the four ax men mug and pout and often join Rose in wildly strutting the stage, never missing a single fiery lick while wielding their guitars like the objects of adoration that they've become. The show opens on a powerful note with "Chinese Democracy" followed by three biggies from Appetite for Destruction, "Welcome to the Jungle," "It's So Easy" and "Mr. Brownstone" before moving into Use Your Illusion II's lengthiest cut, "Estranged." There's no stage patter and there's never a lull in the show as laser lighting, flash pots and three scantily-clad ladies dancing and performing on stripper poles add eye candy to the band's highly-polished sound.

As the film's title indicates with its combination of the album titles Appetite for Destruction and Chinese Democracy, fully half of the 25-song set list comes from those albums. And there are surprises; a take on the lesser-played "Rocket Queen," a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2," bass man Stinson leading the Axl-less band through the Stooges-like "Motivation" from his Village Gorilla Head solo album, Bumblefoot playing "Objectify" from his solo album and a super hot solo from Ashba leading into "Sweet Child O'Mine." Another highlight, and one that is not given credit in the set list, is a Dizzy Reed piano solo that evolves into a cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter." Another treat is a roaring cover of the Who's "The Seeker" with Rose sounding positively Daltrey-esque.

The show's quieter moments, like during Chinese Democracy's "Catcher in the Rye" and "Street of Dreams," are also stunning. But the most spectacular of the more subdued moments comes during "November Rain" with Rose crooning and playing piano aboard a circular rig that, suspended from the ceiling by cables, "floats" him right out over the audience. "Used to Love Her" and "Patience" from the Lies album are end of show high points bookended by manic takes on "Nightrain" and a 10-minute jam on the show-closing "Paradise City" that comes complete with an enormous confetti explosion and a light show that's the most frenetic of the evening.

The combination of excellent musicianship, mesmerizing rock 'n' roll stage presence and superior film work make this show practically jump right into your lap anyway, but Appetite for Democracy can be viewed in 3D for those with the proper gear. The phrase "worth the wait" hardly does this show justice.
