My Record Collection (Duff McKagan)

The sounds the stars have on their stereos. This week, Duff McKagan of GUNS N' ROSES talks to Sylvie Simmons...

FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?

"There were a lot of records around in my house -the James Gang, The Beatles-so I didn't have to go out and buy them. The first one I actually got was Kiss' 'Alive' and an Aerosmith bootleg-but I didn't buy them, I stole them!

"We had a system. In the record store, there was a pinball machine at the hack with a window above the door. I used to put the records in a hag, have one of my buddies go outside, and then put them through the window."

LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?

"I think Soundgarden's 'Down On The Upside' was the last one I bought. Or Prince's 'Chaos An Disorder album."

RECORD YOU'D PUT ON BEFORE A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?

"It's Ice T's 'Power' album. I bet you're going to ask what's a good record for sex? Any Prince record, preferably the singles because they last a long time."

RECORD YOU'D PLAY THE MORNING AFTER A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?

"I haven't had a drink for two- and-a-half years-and I never had a hangover before, because I just kept drinking. Morning records are things like Lenny Kravitz's 'Let Love Rule'."

FAVE RECORD SLEEVE?

"Roxy Music's 'Siren' - or any of those sleeves they did with girls on the front. Those girls were something, especially if you're a kid - like, 13-years-old."

RECORD WHICH CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

"It was a single. D.O.A.'s 'The Prisoner' - I heard it before I'd heard The Sex Pistols. These guys were Canadian; they lived 150 miles away from me in Seattle, and they just opened my eyes. I didn't think of it in terms of punk rock then, it just made me go, 'Wow, I can go play!'. Then I got The Pistols' 'Never Mind The Bullocks', and records by The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers, The Vibrators and Johnny Thunders. But D.O.A. were the ones who changed my life."

MOST EMBARRASSING RECORD IN YOUR COLLECTION?

"None. I don't own any Poison or Warrant records, if that's what you mean!"

RECORD YOU WISH YOU'D PLAYED ON?

"Any of Prince's early records-like '1999', or even the ones before that. That's a mind I'd really have liked to have tapped into."

THREE RECORDS YOU'D GIVE FIVE Ks TO?

"There's so many. 'Raw Power' by Iggy And The Stooges, Aerosmith's 'Toys In The Attic'... And into the '90s, Soundgarden's 'Superunknown'. I'll start killing myself tomorrow-you know, 'Oh, I should've said...!'."

RECORD YOU'D RECOMMEND TO KERRANG! BIDDERS?

"Sly And The Family Stone's 'Greatest Hits'. Go get it, all you metalheads, and get some backheat to your shit."
