MOBY AND AXL ROSE: PRODUCING PALS?

MTV NEWS STAFF
03/18/1997

March 18 [19:00 EST] -- A Guns n' Roses spokesperson confirmed to MTV News that former techno monger and current hard rock disciple Moby has been talking to frontman Axl Rose about producing the next G n' R album.

The spokesperson told MTV that Axl and Moby have been getting along quite well on a personal level, and are currently testing their professional chemistry to see if the union would work.

News of the possible pairing surfaced when the "Allstar" music web site reported that Moby was contributing to a panel discussion on techno music at the annual South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas when he dropped the news on the masses.

Moby reportedly told those gathered that he recently met with Guns frontman Axl Rose to listen to the group's demos for the next album, and he praised the band for incorporating loops into the new songs as well as (if not better than) any other artist.

When the next Guns n' Roses album hits stores, it will mark the arrival of the band's first new material since the release of "Use Your Illusion I and II" six years ago (In 1993, the band released "The Spaghetti Incident" which was comprised entirely of covers). It will also be the band's first effort after the departure of guitarist Slash.

A Guns n' Roses production gig might not be that much a stretch for Moby any more. The techno visionary has recently flaunted his affinity for metal, both on his new album, "Animal Rights," and his recent interviews.

"Right now I'd say my favorite rock artists would be Sepultura, who I just adore, and this band Filter... I really love Hole, Soundgarden, Pantera," Moby recently told MTV News.

"I think it would be really perversely satisfying to be like a top rock guitarist, having gone from like making bad disco records to suddenly be on the cover of guitar magazines," Moby said.
