Like and dislike button

We've always had a reputation system where people could "like" posts, but it has been difficult to find. I have just implemented a new system where you will see a "like" and a "dislike" button in the header of all posts from other people. By clicking on either button the poster gets or loses reputation points.

I will tweak the layout of the buttons later to make it more in tune with the overall graphics of the site, later. Any suggestion to what the buttons could look like?

This feature has been disabled for some time but is now active again.

So that's how I gained a reputation - I've never had one before. For a moment I felt like a "bad girl." How about a kiss or a spanking - for the buttons I mean? beenafix has applaud or smite but I think of being smitten as not a bad thing. Thumb up or down seems the most straightforward.

A kiss and a spanking is a good idea, I will see if I can find some suitable buttons later.

Indeed it is, unfortunately I couldn't find any such buttons so I've requested the making of them on a graphics forum. Let's hope someone bother to do it.

Lips is obvious graphic for a kiss
SWAK is an anacronym for "sealed with a kiss"
SMAK is cartoon non-word for a hit,
and then there is
SWAT, done to flies
if you want to use words as graphics.

That's a possibility but I would still prefer small graphic icons, e.g. of some lips and of a palm about to strike.

There's also the question of whether such a reputation system is a good thing to have; I am afraid it can be abused. An idea could be to only have "thumbs up" and not "thumbs down" so people could only give praise, but we'll cross that river when we come to it.

I don't think anyone in here now would use the fist on another unless it was a joke. Guys often punch each other to show affection in a "manly" way - homophobia at work. I was in a tavern once with someone (a guy who knew and remembered old friends wherever we went) and someone walked in - he yelled across the place the guy's full name and said "Come here, you fat bastard, and buy me a drink!" They hadn't seen each other in 20 years and were very happy to run into each other. They did not hug but when they parted they punched each other. I laughed and laughed. Is this exclusively an American thing? I'm not sure the dislike button will translate as dislike. This experiment could be funny or just confusing.

I am not afraid people will interpret the fist as some sort of affectionate buddy thing, but let's see what happens.

There was a bug with the "kiss" and "fist" buttons, so I changed to another system. Now there's just a "like" button at the bottom of every post.

I wondered where they went...

Yes, the more "likes" you get, the higher your reputation.

That's good, but when you click "like" you get the same thing you used to get after posting - you can choose to return to the post or to the forum...
