Guns N’ Roses’ Reunited Return to the Road Earns $132 Million (and Counting)
By Bob Allen
Guns N’ Roses grossed a whopping $116.8 million during the North American leg of its Not in This Lifetime… Tour that hit the road for nine weeks this summer. The act leads the latest slate of Hot Tours (see list, below).
GNR’s North American tour kicked off on June 23 and included a total of 21 stadiums, wrapping on Aug. 22. The nine-week jaunt was attended by more than one million fans at 25 performances. The tour heads to Latin America next with concerts booked in 11 cities during the fall, and then Asian and Australian dates are on tap for early next year.
The tour reunits Guns N’ Roses members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, who — before this year — hadn’t played a show together since 1993.
The tour came on the heels of a brief run of shows in the spring that included a surprise warm-up gig at Los Angeles nightclub The Troubadour on April 1. The first scheduled shows, a two-night stand at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, followed on April 8 and 9. Ticket sales totaled $6.2 million based on 28,849 sold seats at the new Vegas venue. Also during April, GNR headlined both weekends of the Coachella Music Festival and played two shows at the Mexico City stadium, Foro Sol, which grossed $9.2 million.
Four of the stadiums during the summer run hosted the band for two performances — Chicago’s Soldier Field, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and L.A.’s Dodger Stadium. The New York City market produced the top box office counts with ticket sales reaching $11.6 million at MetLife Stadium from 100,177 fans at two concerts. The other three stadiums each topped the $8 million mark in revenue from their two-show stints.
Following GNR on this week’s slate of Hot Tours is Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, now in the homestretch of The River Tour that is set to wrap on Sept. 14 in Boston. This tally includes the final three dates on the European leg that ended on July 31 along with the first two stops on the tour’s final run through North America.
These five cities’ $33.6 million in sales takes the tour’s overall box office count to an impressive $230 million from 66 performances since the Jan. 16 launch. The total number of tickets sold since the tour’s debut is 2,071,524.
With $18.2 million in sales at the New York/New Jersey area NFL venue, MetLife Stadium is the ongoing tour’s highest-grossing North American date so far, but ranks second worldwide. The River Tour’s top gross was earned in Dublin in late-May with $19.2 million in recorded ticket sales at two sold out concerts.
