U2 send booze to recovering addict Slash

By Luke Byrne

IT HAS been a bad number of months for U2 when it comes to giving gifts - now it seems the ageing rockers have put the proverbial foot in it again.

The group recently received criticism for the release of their new album, Songs of Innocence, on every iTunes account was intrusive and unwanted.

Now it has emerged that another U2 act of kindness has backfired.

American rock legend Slash was in town this week to play a thousands-strong crowd at the 3Arena.

The guitar virtuoso, who was previously a member of Guns N Roses, performed with his new band Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators.

U2 sent Slash a case of Guinness to welcome him to the city.

However, Slash is recovering from alcohol addiction and has spoken publicly about his battle. He once described how alcohol was harder to give up than heroin and revealed how he was given just weeks to live, given the extent of his alcohol abuse.

"I come from, not an alcoholic background, but my dad was a drinker and people in my family were drinkers, and being born in England that was just part of pub culture," Slash previously said in an interview with Classic Rock.

The rocker was not angered by the U2 slip-up and even took to Twitter to thank them.

"Many thanks to @U2 for the "Welcome to Dublin" case of Guinness! The only thing I miss about being sober," he wrote.

The Herald contacted U2's spokesperson, but questions about the gift went unanswered.
