AXL ROSE MAY BE CALLED TO TESTIFY IN STALKING CASE

PROSECUTORS DECIDING WHETHER TO SUBPOENA GUNS N' ROSES SINGER.

LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors in Malibu will decide next month whether Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose should testify against an Ohio woman accused of stalking him.

"I have no reason to believe he won't be cooperative [if we ask him to testify]," Deputy District Attorney Martin Herscovitz said on Wednesday (May 31). "It's just a matter of whether he's necessary to prove the case."

Karen Jane McNeil, 39, is accused of violating a court order by sneaking onto Rose's property in Malibu last month. She has faced the same charges twice before and had been ordered by a judge to stay 300 yards away from the singer.

Her case has been set for trial on June 19. Rose would testify sometime after that date, Herscovitz said. Rose's attorney, Jeff Hilger, said he did not believe his client's testimony would be necessary. He had no further comment.

McNeil will serve a year sentence in county jail if found guilty of the violation, plus an additional six months if convicted of the new harassment charge.

Rose has spent the past several years working on Guns N' Roses' upcoming album, Chinese Democracy. It will be their first album of original material since Use Your Illusion I and II, released simultaneously in 1991.

Stalker Trial Could Lure Out Axl Rose

Reclusive Guns N' Roses Singer Has June 19 Court Date

MALIBU, Calif. (APBnews.com) -- It appears it will take an alleged stalker to return Axl Rose to the public eye, as the Guns N' Roses screecher is scheduled to testify June 19 against a woman arrested earlier this month outside the reclusive rocker's Malibu estate.

Karen Jane McNeil, 39, was back in court today, looking relaxed as she joked with her public defender before facing the judge who, in 1997, ordered her to stay away from Rose, also 39.

The heavy metal idol had filed a restraining order against the defendant after she was found trying to enter his Latigo Canyon home that same year.

Several trespassing incidents

Although those were the only recorded incidents of McNeil allegedly stalking Rose, police said she was a suspect in "several" prior trespassing cases at the singer's mansion.

McNeil will likely remain behind bars until her next court appearance because she is unable to post the $200,000 bail set by Judge Lawrence Mira, her lawyer said. She faces the judge's ruling on her probation violation and a jury trial that same day on the latest stalking charge.

Mira said the trial might be scrapped, however, if McNeil is found guilty of violating his court order, which could result in a year's imprisonment for the Los Angeles woman.

If a trial is required, on the other hand, the reclusive Rose will then have to testify. Rose has a habit of letting years of silence and invisibility slip by between albums.

Malibu public defender William Misener said McNeil maintains her innocence, but he resisted further inquiries as to what she was doing outside Rose's property.

Prosecutor Martin Herscovitz did not return calls seeking comment by press time.
