The new approach appeared to have worked, residents and fire officials said. Although more than 13,000 acres were burned, only two homes and a mobile home were destroyed. Three years ago, more than 360 homes were destroyed and three people were killed.

Jeff Harris, who lost a home in the 1993 firestorm, watched appreciatively Tuesday as firefighters saved the Latigo Canyon home of neighbor Axl Rose, lead singer of the rock band Guns N’ Roses.

“It’s a great effort and a great success story here in terms of saving structures,” Harris said. "After all the people of Malibu lost their homes three years ago, I’m really happy about that fact."
