First time Estranged has been played since 1993! The show that was played in heavy rain with lots of water on stage making movements difficult. With this performance Chinese Democracy has been played live more times than You're Crazy (116 vs 115 times) and is now the 22nd most played song. Tommy and Chris have now played more live shows than Matt Sorum (196 vs 195).

Quotes:
Apologies for f'ing up the Jungle solo tonight, I couldn't see through that stormtrooper helmet and was trying to get it off my head, haha!! [...] But at least I know I can still do this. (With help from Advil, whiskey & massage...) Thanks to ALL of you for tuning in, was an HONOR 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 679352 [... ] #FUCKESTRANGED ! ! Nahhh, just kidding. SO happy to play that song for you all (while pretending I hated it for the last few months, haha!)[...] Thanks to Rua for letting me where the stormtrooper mask! Saw her in the front row with it, HAD to wear it!! [Twitter, October 3, 2011]
I'd say we got off to a rocking start, not a rocky one [StarTribune, November 10, 2011]
The show's been really good, really good, except for Rock In Rio, that was a big mess. It was the first show we did [...] and there was about three inches of water on the stage and all our gear was shooting out, our guitars were crapping out, our gear was crapping out, pyro's misfiring. It was insane to try to play with so much rain that was just killing everything [...] Band's like: "No, why this one?" [...] of all shows, that's the one that is televised in front of 100,000 people. But what are you gonna do? That's the beauty of live shows, you don't know what's gonna happen [...] You can't fight the rain, you are gonna lose [The Gary Garver Live Radio Podcast, November 10, 2011]
At Rock In Rio, we played to 100,000 people and it was just incredible, just the energy [Saratogian Mobile, November 2011]
I see that picture of Axl at Rock in Rio where he was in the yellow raincoat and it was a very unflattering picture. It was everywhere and I still see that picture. [...] I saw (the raincoat picture) yesterday. It’s just funny. The people that want to make him look bad use that picture [Citybeat.com, December 2011]
Playing in the rain at Rock In Rio 2011 as the stage was getting flooded, I put on a Star Wars helmet from the audience and it immediately fogged up and stuck to my face, I couldn't see and couldn't remove it...! Right as I had to play the solo! And of course it was televised, what a mess! [Teraz Rock Magazine, July 2012]

My review:

First off, great to see the start of a new tour so close to the end of the last! But as usual with GN'R, the first show in the tour wasn't very good 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 633633. It definitely had its good parts, but too many bad parts. The band overall was for the most part good, as far as I could tell from the Youtube stream. Dj jazzed up his solo which was really nice to see, I wish the other members would follow suit, it's getting a bit boring now. Dj also played generally very well, I liked his solos on Estranged. After a run through the crowd on Nightrain it seems his guitar died and he started smashing it, so Bumbles and Richard had to finish the song alone.

Bumbles fumbled on the Welcome solo because he was wearing a stormtrooper helmet that kept falling down so he couldn't see. He seemed frustrated but it was funny to watch. Another nice episode was Axl bringing Beta, her sister and her father out on stage.

Axl struggled a lot in the beginning and throughout the show at some songs. What was a bit discouraging is that he was off key at times. This is not common for him. But for the most part his main problem was getting the raspiness into his voice and sustaining tones. It was uncomfortable listening to him go from a low raspy voice into a thin high voice whenever he needed to belt tones. It wasn't as bad as in 2002, but definitely gave me deja vu. In addition he also forget the lyrics here and there, which obviously bothered him, especially at the end of November Rain where he stopped singing altogether (thanks for Bumbles for pulling the solos off instead). Axl did very well on some songs, though, like Patience, Estranged, Knockin' and even Nightrain. So, all in all, not a good performance by Axl, but sadly this is expected at the first show of a new tour. He'll probably do better in November... 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 240178

The show wasn't as long as expected, but I guess the extreme downpour (it was hazardous at times) and Axl's voice problems explains that. Musical highlight was definitely Estranged where the whole band, including Axl, did very well. Fantastic to hear an old favourite again, and thanks to the band for listening to the fans' request. I heard the crowd chant 'Coma', so I guess that is the next old-timer the band has to pull out.

So, all in all an average to poor show. If Axl can find back his late 2010 voice then the rest of the tour will be better and there's no reason to not assume that will happen 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 373930

Couldn't watch it in the morn and after I saw Estranged in YouTube and the above review, I can't say I'm sorry. From what I saw Ron's beard is longer than ever and Axl's fatter than ever and in an awful shape. Let's hope things will improve in the course of the tour.

Review from "It Don't Really Matter" at mygnrforum:

Just got home from the concert. I'll honestly say most of the people around me near the stage enjoyed the concert. That still doesn't take away the true facts that have been posted here before. I really did not notice Axl's poor voice in WTTJ, and I actually thought he nailed Estranged, This I Love and KOHD.... He REALLY messed up November Rain though.... I felt like DJ was pissed as fuck during the concert, and I mean REALLY pissed. Tommy was also in a bad mood, Axl was more concerned about his personal affairs than to his 'job', Bumblefoot and Fortus were perfect, expect for that let down on WTTJ and Nightrain by Bumblefoot. Frank messed up the intro to You Could Be Mine.

The most important negative factors NO DOUBTS, and this is by someone who was there and saw people commenting, were:

1- RAIN... HELL THAT RAIN WAS COLD AS FUCK, YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!!!! I WAS SHIVERING, DEFINITELY WILL GET A COLD...
2- TIRESOME AS FUCK.... SOAD, EVANESCENCE, PITTY and DETONAUTAS+ WAITING FOR AXL + RAIN, IT'S JUST TOO MUCH, PEOPLE WERE LEAVING BEFORE GnR EVEN STARTED, A LOT OF PEOPLE.
3- THE SETLIST THAT WAS SHOWN ON FACEBOOK PUT OUR HOPES SO FUCKING HIGH UP IT WAS IN IMMENSE LET DOWN..

I don't say he didn't do his job. But it was amusing. I don't know when was the last time they played Estranged but the last Estranged video I watched was with Slash.

Review in Monsters of Rock:

Guns N’ Roses played to a soggy but massive audience this evening/morning at the Rock in Rio as a part of their kick off for their tour in 2011. Guns N’ Roses was nearly at top form for the most of the concert. But due to the rain and possible audio issues (at least on my end), there were small delays in between songs. At times during the delay, sometimes a quick instrumental would be played between band members while something was possibly fixed or adjusted. But, when the band played, the band was tight and was amazing. Axl first came out what I thought was a yellow raincoat but by the third song, it was taken off. Axl mentioned in the beginning that they would be playing it safe but playing songs. It was at this time I saw people with brooms pushing the water off the stage creating a waterfall at times. Yeah, lots of water.

With the torrential down pour, it was amazing that the band played as well as they did due to the circumstances but by the end of the concert, it seemed they were getting tired and going through the motions. But that didn’t detract from the concert itself. Axl was in top form and his singing actually surprised on how his strong his voice was. During songs like “Sorry” he sung it with a passion that really made me pay attention to his performance. The were only two negatives that I saw in the concert: between songs, there were delays that kept breaking the flow of the concert. Your all into the song and bam, delay. Get going again, bam! Delay. That got a little old after while. Again, however, probably due to rain issues which at times I did see crew on stage while they were performing and in between the songs. Axl even changed into fresh clothes during a solo. The second thing was that toward the end, it got slow and a few times I was looking at my watch. Over all, the concert was great to see, especially at the Rock in Rio festival and well worth the wait. Looking back at this concert, you know this band is going to get stronger as the tour progresses as most bands do when they tour and when that happens, watch out. This could be one hell of tour this fall. See them if you can.

Review in Metalholic Magazine:

Axl Hunts Wascully Wabbits in Wio

Axl Rose is nothing if not temperamental, but on a damp October night in a downpour of rain, he and his legacy, Guns N’ Roses returned to Rio de Janeiro for Rock In Rio IV, and he was in an exceptional mood. Despite the inclement weather and a very poor job by the sound man early on (you couldn’t hear his vocals to start the show, and yet he never once threw his mic), Axl took it all in stride.

The band opened with “Chinese Democracy”, arguably a poor choice to kick off the show, but the crowd responded loudly and warmly. Axl took the stage in a massive yellow coat that looked more like a Gucci raincoat. With cowboy hat and sunglasses in place the band continued on into “Welcome To The Jungle” Guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal wore a Star Wars storm-trooper helmet for this one.

Sticking with the band’s debut album they tore through “It’s So Easy” and “Mr. Brownstone” before returning to their 2008 release, Chinese Democracy for “Sorry” and “There Was A Time”. The former track was one of the worst of the night. Performance-wise it felt a little sloppy, particularly Axl’s vocals. Still, it’s splitting hairs to tear down a solid show over one or two weak tracks.

“Live & Let Die” came next followed by “Rocket Queen” and a nice guitar performance by DJ Ashba. Ashba kicked off the trademark guitar intro for “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” and the already stoked crowd came unhinged.

One of the show’s highlights came in the form of “Estranged” from Use Your Illusion II, which Axl announced the band hadn’t played live in 18 years.

The band returned to Chinese Democracy again for the tracks “Better” and Street of Dreams” which bookended a band jam of The Who‘s “Baba O’Reilly” led by pianist Dizzy Reed. While the band as a whole did a great job, Reed’s piano work was often marred by sloppy mistakes.

“You Could Be Mine” and “November Rain” went back to back, and it was during the latter when Axl seemed to see something in the crowd that both distracted and irritated him. For the remainder of the show his mood seemed to change.

Bumblefoot got his own chance to shine on a band jam of the “Theme from the Pink Panther”, where Thal lit the fretboard up to the delight of everyone. Fellow guitarist Richard Fortus came out with an acoustic guitar for “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” where Axl found a moment of levity, with a self-deprecating mimic of Elmer Fudd hunting wabbits.

uns N’ Roses closed out the set in raucous fashion with an ass-kicking monster performance of “Nightrain”. They soon returned for a double chorus of “Patience” and “Paradise City”.

In all it was a very engaging and exciting performance despite a few less than stellar moments. Axl may be the lone member of the original band, but Ashba, Fortus and Thal add their own unique style, as well as the rhythm section of bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Frank Ferrer.

Probably we should be grateful they played Estranged (which is IMO a difficult song to perform) at all. But I didn't like it much, especially Axl's performance.

Finally I found some time to watch a few vids. The quality was low. There were some good vids as Patience (or the part I managed to see), This I Love, Rocket Queen & Live & Let Die, November Rain wasn't that great, Welcome To The Jungle apart from the flashy raincoat Lol was weak. All in all it could be summirized with this:

That might be because they can't afford it 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 240178. But seriously, I can't see any evidence of surgery on his face, he did seem a bit...weird in 2001, though. But who cares? Or rather, why should I care how he looks? I like listening to Tom Waits and reading Bukowski, too. Why should their art be marred by appearances? Criticising musicians for their appearance is about as absurd as criticising authors for their appearance, it doesn't affect the music one bit. So get over it.

2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Empty Re: 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Another review from "foker" at mygnrforum:

After four shows and standing four about 13-14 hours, everybody was completely wet, tired and cold. I wasn't expecting much from the rest of the crowd, but was hoping the band could change my mind.
After i don't know how many hours, people got very excited with CD and jungle, axl voice wasn't as bad as it is on the videos, and people was very pissed with the mess in the jungle solo... get the helmet of and fucking play the solo.
Only the major hits made the crowd go crazy, even songs like it's so easy, mr browstone and rocket queen were only ok for the crowd. Chinese Democracy songs didn't get a good response at all, only on This I Love people applauded axl on the middle of the song, he sounded really good. His voice was obviously not as good as 20 years ago and even last year but was far from being bad as it sounds on the tv.

The members didn't get a good response from the crowd at any time... i don't like long intrumental solos at any shows, but 3 guitar solos and a piano solo, at 4~5am was really too much, people was pissed. People was pissed too with the silly "GUNS... N... ROSES" thing after every song, the first time was cool, the second was ok, after that, no...Also, the response after the songs was really weak too, i watched the videos and it seems people was crazy after the end of the songs, put it was very few people, almost none near me (and i was very close to the stage). And when a member asked the crowd to clap or something, very very few people responded, i think this was because of the cold and fatigue tho. Axl, of course, was the exception, when he came to the left part of the stage near where i was, in patience, people just went crazy. He never asks the crowd for clapping, but if he had done it yesterday, i think even the security guards would do it.

The band was really good, except for axl, they really seemed to rehearsal a lot. I think 3 guitars is too much and that Pittman is completely unnecessary, but, as far as it goes, they were very good.

Estranged was so freaking awesome, definitly the top moment of the night, it's my favorite song and when it started the crowd went crazy, everybody singing the beginning, wasn't expecting it. Was a fantastic perfomance.

A few times the crowd kept asking for don't cry.

The sound effect thing on live and let die was embaressing, didn't sound good and was out of sync, no one liked it.

kohd was fantastic too, i don't really like this version, but it really hit the crowd

Axl forgetting the lyrics on november rain and patience made everyone pissed, this is unforgivable... of course he was pissed too after november rain and kept like that for the rest of the show.

They really need to improve the time between songs, just seemed they were like "what do we do now?" Didn't seem it was because the rain and didn't seem at all a huge band headlining a huge festival... i went to slipknot and metallica last sunday and their show was tecnically perfect.

After Paradise City, everyone was hoping they would come back to wave for the crowd... it was a disappoitment for everyone that they didn't.

Rubbish, it was a nice, warming gesture to Beta and her family 2011.10.02 - Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 731979

Yeah, it was very sweet. And innovative, too *nod* And when Axl opens his mouth to sing it becomes perfectly clear whose fault it is *giggle*

The problem with that is not so much the voice but that he both forgot the lyrics and played wrong. I wonder what happened Sad

How what happened? Everything was against Axy again- Beta, the rain & all the fuckers there. The fact that he obviously didn't bother to rehearse with the others beforehand is irrelevant of course *coffee*

What are you talking about? I am talking about what happened when he forgot the lyrics to the ending of November Rain and even played in the wrong key for a while. No one is claiming that was caused by Beta, the rain or the audience...what are you rambling on about? And rehearsing with the band shouldn't really be necessary to remember the lyrics and key to a song he has sung live 343 times before. Something happened, I don't know what it was.

I can't say what happened & frankly I don't give a fuck. The thing that is obvious is that Axl is out of shape and he should have rehearsed with the band more regardless the fact that he played November Rain, for example, zillions of time. But as always it's not his fault but somebody's or something's else. That's what I was rambling about above.
