Next we went to São Paulo, Brazil, for two more shows. Back to the craziness again.

Axl stopped the first show in São Paulo about four times. First, because there was a fight in the crowd. Second, because there were stones being thrown onstage. Third, I think because he got hit with a tennis shoe or something like that. And lastly, during “Paradise City,” their final song of the evening, when a stone hit drummer Matt Sorum.

That was the last straw. Axl and the band walked offstage halfway through the song.

I think his parting words that night, were, “Good night, and f*** you, assholes.”

Police charge Rose with endangering lives

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Police have charged American rock star Axl Rose of “endangering human lives” for hurling a swivel chair off a mezzanine at a group of people.

No one was hurt in the Wednesday incident, which occurred less than 24 hours after the lead singer of the Guns N’ Roses group arrived in South America’s largest city for two performances.

Conviction on the charges could mean a sentence of up to one year in prison, Barbosa said. Police have 30 days to present their case to a judge.

Police officer Regina Neves Guerra said by phone that Rose’s target was a small group of journalists, fans and guests of the hotel where he is staying.

“While he was playing pool in the hotel’s game room, William Bailey, alias Axl Rose, spotted the crowd in the lobby. He then picked up the chair and hurled it at the group” from a 33-foot-high mezzanine, she said, “and then walked away.”

“Luckily the chair fell to the ground before it reached the crowd. No one was hurt,” she added.

She said the complaint against Rose was filed by journalists from the Jornal do Brasil, O Globo, Folha da Trade and Folha de Sao Paulo newspapers.

Inspector Antonio Carlos Menezes Barbosa said police questioned and formally charged Rose in the hotel.

The Associated Press tried to contact Rose and his spokeswoman, Wendy Laister, but the hotel refused to place the calls through to their rooms.

Last month, a judge in Clayton, Mo., put Rose on probation for two years and ordered him to donate $50,000 to social service organizations for starting a riot at a Guns N’ Roses concert About 80 people were hurt in the July 2, 1991, riot in Maryland Heights, 15 miles from St. Louis.

They made me sign a document saying that I didn't wanna throw that chair. I wanted to throw it, and, if they stop me again, I'll  throw and throw however many chairs needed. This is a song called 'Double Talkin' Jive Motherfucker!' [Onstage in Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 10, 1992]

About Craig Duswalt quote: the last straw was actually when a tennis shoe hit Axl in the chest during Paradise City. He got pissed off and threw the mic as far as he could on the audience. And ended the show. It was the last song anyway. And it was a very short and shitty setlist missing Nightrain, Rocket Queen etc... Mind you that a torrential rain fell on that day in São Paulo and there was a lot of mud where the audience was standing, so the tennis shoe that hit Axl was all muddy and you could see that Axl's t-shirt got mud stains after he was hit by the shoe.

My first time seeing what was left of GN'R and I went out of the show thinking "this is not the band I fell in love with, this has nothing to do with the five guys I grew up listening to" and I also remember thinking "the singer looks like a totally different person from the live image I had of him from Ritz 1988 (three years ago)"

Just some clippings from unknown Brazilian publications, found on katyaani, tumblr.

Dec. 9, 1992 (date figured out from the references that the shows would be in the next two days):

1992.12.10 - Estacionamento Do Anhenbi, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1992_138

The article mentions that fans tried to invade the hotel the band was staying at. Axl had arrived on the previous day, separately and earlier than the rest of the band, accompanied by Stephanie Seymour with whom he spent all day in their hotel suite and didn't get out at all.

1992.12.10 - Estacionamento Do Anhenbi, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1992_139

- Wendy Laister (GN'R international tour publicist) is quoted saying that Axl rarely drinks and gets homeopathic treatment for his throat problems; also that the reason the band wanted to tour South America was that they were impressed by the crowd in Rock in Rio.
- A female teenage fan says she won't leave the hotel until she sees Axl. Another female fan says she got a wry neck from looking up (at Axl's suite on the 20th floor) all the time and she missed class to be outside the hotel.
- Picture: Duff and his wife Linda, who arrived later, went for a walk on the beach.
- Report about the girl who was injured - and eventually died - in Chile.

Probably Dec. 10:

1992.12.10 - Estacionamento Do Anhenbi, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1992_140

- Axl wanted to visit a church in Sao Paulo, but the driver told him that it wouldn't be open at that time of night. So Axl, with Stephanie Seymour and his bodyguard Earl, went to a club instead, where Axl danced, talked with fans and ate pasta. Then Axl wanted to take a walk in the Ibirapuera Park, but it was closed. The group returned to the hotel at 6:00 a.m.
- Picture top right: Fans desperate to see Axl.
- Picture bottom: Axl and Earl moments before Axl threw the chair at the reporters.

Part of interview with Slash:

1992.12.10 - Estacionamento Do Anhenbi, Sao Paulo, Brazil 1992_141

The article mentions that the interview was rescheduled twice and that questions about the chair incident were forbidden. Slash, however, says: "I understand Axl's attitude. Our privacy is being taken away. We feel violated by the press that sees only the drugs and sex aspect and forgets about rock." Slash also prompted parents to let their children go to the shows.
