Here is a copy of the actual check from Geffen to the band members which they were given on the date of signing with Geffen Records. The amount is $75 thousand, $15 thousand to each band member, half of which ($7,500) was immediately made available to each members and went to stuff like equipment, tattoos, drugs, etc.
Axl had problems depositing the money in the band since he wasn't legally named "Axl Rose" at the time, and Slash wasn't named Stash.
