Cool vid from a nice "private gig" I had the honour of being invited to back in April:

Very nice song - and the venue reminded me of book Rat Scabies and The Holy Grail which I just finished reading and recommend. Good also to see a place with such acoustics open to performance art. I got to see/hear Dayna Kurtz perform in a bookshop, just she, her songs and acoustic guitar and the sound quality was enormously gratifying - one wall was all paned glass two stories high with cathedral ceiling and the other three walls completely filled with shelves of books. I am inspired to share a Dayna Kurtz vid so I'll have a looksee in YouTube.

Nice comment! I've always liked old churches, now even more since that book!

Well, it was a "private show", by invitation only. An old mate who's known the performer for years organised it as a "warm up" gig (Paul had some support gigs for P.Boa afterwards), his living room simply got too small for the people who agreed to come, so his mother-in-law organised for this church to be used (not sure if they'd do this more often)...
Acoustics and atmosphere was great of course!

Re: The 'What are you listening to?' thread
I saw a link to a documentary video posted in series in a Huffington Post blog and got to watch episode 1.
Mike Campbell: My Guitars. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-campbell/the-guitars_b_1406937.html
It is fascinating and I enjoyed watching but... It isn't in YouTube (yet) so I was trying but not able to view the rest of the series... It seems the rest is only available to members of the fan club? Only it is called Mike Campbell: The Guitars. Hmmmm.
Anyway, I found this video clip and enjoyed it instead. I am guessing that: Mike Campbell, along with guitarist Link Wray, famous for his cover of Apache among a lot of other pioneer sounds, are both of them admired by, and influences on, Richard Fortus. Just a guess...

Yes! HUGE amps on that Crazy Horse.
Fender stacks? I bet Ray Wylie Hubbard got a good chuckle when he spotted those.
Was it really really loud?

It was loud enough, but thankfully with an "acoustic" middle part (Neil played his big one "Heart of Gold" a.o.) for the audience to recover from the VERY noisy end of new song "Walk like a giant"!
Those amps are mockery of course, I'm sure there are smaller amps hidden inside.
Before the show, roadies who were dressed up as "mad scientists" (it's called the "Alchemy tour") took like forever to set the stage up, acting like the were having endless discussions etc.
But apart from that, it was a great show, ending with an 18minute version of "Like a hurricane".
At 67, Neil is still rocking with Crazy Horse like he did since 1969...

Re: The 'What are you listening to?' thread
I am immersed in Americana - not sure it is popular outside of US. I've bought a bit of new music lately, some of it pre-ordered and it was released and delivered to me all at once. There is a wonderful resurgence in Southern music right now and I hope this tide continues to rise.
Mississippi represented:
Sounds from Alabama and an excellent example of porch recording, DIY is on the rise and welcomed here:
I just got both of these albums, taking U.S. Americana charts by storm, plus the newest album called Love and Dirt by Session Americana out of Massachusetts, where I am from.
Saw Session Americana live last Saturday night for the first time and at a brand new venue with no bad sounding seat in the house [DANG!] - brilliant encore medley of a Muddy Waters and a Howling Wolf cover executed Session Americana style. Rocked my socks off - went home barefoot.
Session Americana always performs around a microphoned cafe table, facing each other. They are a general core group that can be changeable depending on the performers' schedules with other bands but it doesn't matter because they are multi-instrumentalists and the performances are intended to be organic and spontaneous. They often have guests performers as well - these are rehearsed - so any given concert by Session Americana is unpredictable except that it will be satisfying. I am also very entertained by the number of groups that have interchangeable and open commitments with their members - GNR no exception. Frank jumped in short notice to fill in for The Dead Daisies drummer Alex who needed to go back to Australia mid-tour for personal hiatus, likely to rejoin the Daisies for their upcoming tour with Black Star Riders.... Meanwhile, looking forward to the new album, recording wrapping up soon, by The Compulsions featuring both Frank and Richard...
BTW Richard Fortus's latest recording project, Black Mariah, is debuting new release in Vienna soon....
Big Fat Verbose Post - I'll shut up now.

It is in Germany. Depending on what bands/musicians you describe as "Americana". This label has been put to use e.g. with The Walkabouts, who I like a lot (and they've toured Germany quite often).puddledumpling wrote:I am immersed in Americana - not sure it is popular outside of US.
There are a few clubs down here who like to put on gigs you could describe as Americana (and those clubs do use this term).

Not so popular in Norway, though. But we're a small country with not much room for alternative music cultures.

At least you're going to get some gigs from Duncan Reid (formerly of The Boys, a brilliant pop-punk group from way back)!Soulmonster wrote: But we're a small country with not much room for alternative music cultures.

20. September, Kristiansund (Norway) Fasting Kjellern,

(If you like The Boys just a little bit, go check him out! His new single "Kelly's Gone Insane" is incredibly catchy! I hope to see him on October 12th, also his former bandmates play Germany in early October!)

Good idea about listening to "Going Down"!
New album by The Mission is surprisingly good (to my ears at least):

Been listening to a lot of music by Hugo Race (founder member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds and touring/recording with his own band for over 20 years; plus playing with many other musicians/projects):
